RIYADH: The day is finally here, the long-awaited Saudi Cup day of top-class racing gets underway at the King Abdul Aziz Racetrack on Saturday in the Saudi Arabian capital of Riyadh.

The day consisted of eight races with a total purse of $29.2 million.

Maximum Security and his jockey Luis Saez won the main event and final race of the day with an inaugural $20 million.

Meanwhile, Japanese racing also won big, as Full Flat triumphed the Saudi Derby with Yutaka Take in the saddle - $800,000 was the prize pool for that one.

Take nearly had back-to-back wins, but he was pipped by a short head by New York Central in a thrilling Saudia Sprint. That was the penultimate race before the big one.
