SILICON VALLEY: Japan’s Sony Corp. said Thursday it will invest 250 million dollars to acquire a minority stake in Epic Games Inc. of the United States, the creator and operator of the globally popular Fortnite online game.

Sony will take a 1.4 percent stake in the US firm, according to US media reports.

“Through our investment, we will explore opportunities for further collaboration with Epic to delight and bring value to consumers and the industry at large, not only in games, but also across the rapidly evolving digital entertainment landscape,” Sony President Kenichiro Yoshida said in a statement.

Epic was founded in 1991. The number of Fortnite players worldwide exceeded 350 million this April. The company, with over 2,200 employees, is also known for its game engine development.
