TOKYO: Tokyo Film Festival Chairman Hiroyasu Ando and Shozo Ichiyama, the president and producer of the FilmEXfestival, have decided on a geographical merger between the two festivals, which will continue to remain independent from each other.

According to Ando, most of the festivals will occur in the Ginza district of Tokyo, which has a long tradition in the history of entertainment and cinema. At a Foreign Correspondents’ Club conference, he said that the festival focuses on gender parity.

Ichiyama, the founder of the FilmEX festival and current director of programming for the Tokyo International Film Festival, is one of the great Japanese producers who has brought the work of filmmaker Takeshi Kitano and other great filmmakers to international recognition.

This time, Ichiyama cheered on young director Keisuke Yoshida and his film Intolerance (Kuhaku), the story of a father who loses his daughter in a car accident and who faces up to those responsible for his child’s death and the weight of prejudice.

Filmmaker Yoshida will be featured at this 34th festival, where he will present three works. His film, Intolerance, will be released on screens from Oct. 6.

The Tokyo Film Festival runs from Nov. 30 to Dec. 8, and tickets will go on sale from Oct. 24.
