DUBAI: The 11th grandmaster of Tenshin Ryu Hyoho, RYUSETSU Ide, shares his inspiration for the traditional Japanese martial art.

Tenshin Ryu Hyoho is one of Japan’s most traditional schools of martial arts, which includes Kenjutsu, So-jutsu, Naginata-jutsu, Yawara-te (jujutsu) and Hozoin-rye Kage-ha Jumonji So-jutsu, all are diverse forms of martial arts founded around the Eiroku era (1558-1570).

The samurai benefitted from this diverse art in a way that allowed them to always be fully prepared to protect their people and land at any time; RYUSETSU, the 11th grandmaster of Tenshin Ryu Hyoho talked about his inspiration for Tenshin Ryu Hyoho and said exclusively to Arab News Japan, “As you can imagine, me as well as many others have loved swords since I was a child, influenced by manga and anime, and I always thought that one day I would like to swing a sword in a cool way. Then, when I was a college student, a friend of mine asked me if I wanted to learn Japanese traditional martial arts (kobujutsu) with him. I did some research and found a Tenshin Ryu Dojo near my house and went there for a trial.”

From RYUSETSU’s perspective, the most important additions from this art and from Japanese culture in general, which he adapted into his daily life are etiquette and courtesy.

The grandmaster also talked about some of the challenges he faced during his time with Tinshen Ryu Hyoho saying; “When I was a university student, I had time to go to training, but as a working adult, there were times when I couldn’t go to training at all because of work, and because I lived in a rural area, it took me three hours each way from home to the dojo in Yokohama. I think that was the hardest time for me. The other is to confront the reality that it is not easy to make a living just by teaching kobujutsu. We are finally managing to make a living by working with other teachers to create a system to teach Tenshin Ryu online using IT tools to people overseas. I don’t want the next generation of grandmaster to experience the same hardships I did, so I am focusing on my role to create an environment where they can have a proper family and focus on teaching with peace of mind.”

RYUSETSU also contributed to the formation of the Sony playstation game Ghost of Tsushima; he was approached by Sony to demonstrate techniques needed and how to incorporate the original non-reactive movements of martial arts into the game.

The grandmaster also conducted seminars lecturing in the UAE about Tenshin Ryu Hyoho; he gave his fourth seminar recently at Buhsikan dojo in Ajman and he hopes to pursue teaching the Japanese art in the UAE; he said exclusively to Arab News Japan “I don’t have any concrete projects in the immediate future, but now that the confusion caused by the Covid -19 has finally subsided, I hope to be able to start demonstrating, holding seminars, and even teaching Tenshin Ryu Hyoho officially in the UAE next year. I would also be happy if we could do the same in other GCC countries.”
