TOKYO: Japan co-hosted the 4th Coast Guard Global Summit in Rome from September 10 to 12 with participation from 99 countries and regions, including Saudi Arabia.
Other participants from the Arab League included Qatar, Oman, Jordan, Morocco, Lebanon, Tunisia, Mauritania, and Somalia.
The meeting reaffirmed that maintaining peaceful and stable seas, as well as clean and bountiful seas, is in the common interest of all humankind, and that maritime safety and security and a clean marine environment constitute the foundation for the well-being and prosperity of the international community.
It stated that maintaining maritime order based on the rule of law at sea under international maritime law is an essential foundation for people utilizing the ocean and that cooperation among Coast Guards worldwide is necessary to overcome challenges the world is facing.
It added that there is a need to respond to the challenges facing the world, such as global climate change, threats to the environment, illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing, and social instability posed by organized crime.
The meeting also recognized that the Coast Guard Global Summit has become a global platform for cooperation among coast guards, as well as the importance of deepening the understanding of shared principles of conduct in the maritime sector and further enhancing the coast guard capacity around the world.
