Former Renault-Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn said in an interview aired Tuesday that the recent normalization of relations between Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain is a step needed to drive investment in Middle East.

Asked in the interview on the local LBC TV whether Lebanon would “join the peace train” and normalize ties with Israel, Ghosn responded: “I think that the direction the region is going in needs peace to have economic investment, which has already started.”

“As a businessman, I don’t want wars. I want peace so that I can sustain my economy and I can see that in the region it has started, and I don’t want to be the last. It depends on what you want. Do you want an economy and development? You need to choose what you want,” Ghosn added.

Ghosn, who is credited with turning round the Japanese and French carmakers before he faced charges of financial wrongdoing that he denies, elaborated on the future of the Middle East, the impact that the the Abraham Accords signed September 15 and his thoughts on peace with Israel from a business perspective by focusing on the economic and technological developments that the agreement would help enhance.

“The Middle East will become a hub of technology and the peace that happened between Emirates and Israel will motivate the movement in this direction,” Ghosn said, indicating that Israel will increase the competition in the region by spurring economic growth through trade, increasing startups and prompting technological innovation.

“Peace with Israel poses a competition in terms of production and creativity, amongst other things, which is a good form of competition because it will motivate startups in countries such as Lebanon, Syria and Iraq. This will force us to improve our infrastructure in order to benefit from the opportunity that may open,” Ghosn said.
