TOKYO: Japanese plant engineering firm Chiyoda Corp. said Tuesday that it and French peer Technip Energies have won an order to build an export hub for liquefied natural gas in Qatar.

The order from state-owned oil company Qatar Petroleum is worth far over 1 trillion yen, which will be split in half between Chiyoda and Technip Energies.

The two companies plan to build four plants to liquefy natural gas produced in the northeastern part of the Middle Eastern country, as well as a facility to capture carbon dioxide to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases.

Construction of the gas liquefaction plants is expected to be completed between 2025 and 2027.

The project is expected to push up Qatar’s LNG output by some 40 percent from the current level to 110 million tons a year.
