TOKYO: Toyota Motor Corp. started sales of its fully remodeled Land Cruiser SUV in Japan on Monday.

The new Land Cruiser, given the first full revamp since 2007, features a fingerprint authentication function, the first for a mass-produced Toyota vehicle. The function was installed as a security measure since Land Cruisers are often stolen.

The engine starts by placing a finger over a button with a built-in sensor. It does not start unless the fingerprint matches the fingerprint information registered in advance.

The vehicle achieved a weight reduction of some 200 kilograms through the use of aluminum for the hood and other measures.

The remodeled Land Cruiser, priced between 5.1 million and 8 million yen, is already sold in Russia and the Near and Middle East.

Toyota plans to sell the vehicle in other Asian countries as well. The new model will be available in a total of 130 countries and regions eventually.
