Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association Chairman Akio Toyoda, president of Toyota Motor Corp., on Thursday called for a tax system overhaul to promote vehicles with next-generation technologies.

"A drastic revision to the tax system must be considered" to promote CASE, or connected, autonomous, shared and electric, vehicle technologies, Toyoda told a press conference in his capacity of JAMA chairman.

"I hope that discussions on the matter will advance in 2020," he said. In Japan, taxes on automobile possession were lowered in October.

"We'll put further efforts on tax issues, with a view to protecting the (overall) manufacturing sector," Toyoda said.
