TOKYO: Large Typhoon Nanmadol has disrupted operations at retailers and many other industries in Japan.

More than 4,000 outlets of three major conveniences store operators were subject to planned closures Monday.

At Seven-Eleven Japan Co., the number of such stores stood at 2,216 as of 9 a.m. (midnight Sunday GMT), up sharply from about 610 as of Saturday. The stores are located in the Kyushu southwestern region, the Chugoku, Shikoku and Kansai western regions, and the Chubu central region.

Across Kyushu and in parts of Chugoku, Seven-Eleven Japan suspended product delivery services and production of “bento” boxed meals and other food items between Sunday evening and Monday evening.

The number of convenience stores subject to planned closures stood at about 1,160 at FamilyMart Co. as of 8 a.m. Monday and about 700 at Lawson Inc. as of 1 p.m.

Major supermarket operator Ito-Yokado Co. decided to move up the closing time for Monday to 3-7 p.m. from 9-10 p.m. at a total of eight outlets in Osaka and Hyogo prefectures in Kansai and Gifu Prefecture in Chubu.

These retailers took the measures to ensure the safety of their employees and customers.

At Japan Post Co., some mail and parcel delivery services were delayed in Chugoku, Shikoku, Kyushu, the northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido and the southernmost prefecture of Okinawa due mainly to cancellations of flights and marine transport services.

Parcel delivery services were also delayed at Yamato Transport Co. while Sagawa Express Co. suspended delivering and picking up parcels in areas including Kansai and the northern part of Kyushu, such as Fukuoka Prefecture.

Mobile phone services were affected in some areas of western Japan. Fixed-line phone and internet services of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone West Corp. became unavailable.
