TOKYO: Japan’s Mazda Motor Corp. will terminate its vehicle production in Russia, which has been suspended in response to the country’s invasion of Ukraine, it was learned Sunday.

Mazda began discussing the matter with its Russian partner, Sollers, as it cannot see when it will be able to resume the production.

Among Japanese automakers, Toyota Motor Corp. has already announced a decision to end its vehicle production in Russia.

Mazda is engaged in knockdown production of the CX-5 SUV and some other models at a plant of a joint venture with Sollers in Vladivostok in Russia’s Far East from 2012.

After Russia’s aggression against Ukraine began in February this year, Mazda stopped supplying parts to the plant in March and halted the production there the next month.

Mazda’s vehicle sales in Russia totaled 29,000 units in 2021.
