As the fight against the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic continues to spread around the world, there have been global shortages of face masks and protective suits, according to the World Health Organization’s director general, who said there was “widespread inappropriate use” by those not on the frontline caring for patients.

The centers for disease control and prevention (CDC) has recommended that citizens wear cloth face coverings in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain (e.g., grocery stores and pharmacies) especially in areas of significant community-based transmission in order to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

The CDC emphasized that the face coverings recommended are not surgical masks or N-95 respirators, which are critical supplies reserved for healthcare workers and other medical first responders.

As part of a campaign to encourage people to wear them as an additional, voluntary public health measure, the CDC has created a 45 second video named How To Make Your Own Face Mask.”

In the video tutorial, US Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams demonstrates how one can easily craft a face mask at home, using common materials at low cost or household items such as an old scarf, hand towel, bandana, or an old T-shirt by simply folding the piece if cloth and using rubber bands to secure it to the face.
