TOKYO: An Arabic Language Performance Contest 2025 was held at Keio University’s Hiyoshi Campus on Saturday, highlighting the growing interest in the Arabic language among Japanese students.

The event was organized by the Sheikha Fatima Arabic Learning Center (ALC), part of Keio University’s Research Center for Foreign Language Education. Keio University in Tokyo is one of the top private universities in Japan.

Most of the participants were Japanese students studying Arabic in Japan. They took part in the contest according to their learning level and delivered speeches, readings, and performances entirely in Arabic. Many of the presentations focused on personal experiences, values, peace, and cross-cultural understanding, demonstrating how Japanese learners are using Arabic as a means of self-expression.

A notable number of participants had been studying Arabic for only six months to one year, reflecting the expanding interest in the language among young people in Japan. Beyond linguistic skills, many students expressed a strong desire to better understand the cultures, societies, and values of the Arab world.

The contest served as an opportunity to showcase the current state and achievements of Arabic language education in Japan, while also strengthening cultural ties between Japan and the Arab world.

At the end of the competition, certificates of achievement were distributed to the winners, in addition to holding a concert of Arabic music. ALC will be holding Arabic Language Week events from December 15 to 19 at the Hiyoshi Campus.
