Jordan’s world record holder Abdelkareem Khattab won gold in the powerlifting men’s -88 kg category, with Egypt’s Hany Abdelhady claiming bronze in the same competition, at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games on Sunday morning.

The 30-year-old Jordanian broke the Paralympic record at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium with a lift of 231 kg to win ahead of silver medalist Ye Jixiong of China, who managed a best effort of 220 kg.

The 24-year-old Abdelhady secured third place with lift of 214 kg, 2kg more than fourth-placed Farhod Umirzakov of Uzbekistan.

Khattab is the world record holder in the category, having managed to lift 240 kg at the 11th Fazza Dubai 2021 Para Powerlifting World Cup in Dubai in June.
