The Tokyo Metropolitan government announced Friday that it is developing new permanent facilities, including the Ariake Arena and the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, that will be used as venues for the Olympics and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.

The Ariake Arena, which was completed Dec. 9, will have its grand opening ceremony on Feb 2., 2020. Volleyball and wheelchair basketball demonstrations and a mini-concert will be performed during the commemoration.

All Tokyo residents are invited and those participating in the Ariake Arena opening ceremony are expected to register in advance. The website for the Ariake venue will only be available in Japanese from Dec. 18.

The Tokyo Aquatics Centre has an expected date of completion at the end of February 2020. The venue’s opening ceremony will be on March 22, with full details of the function expected to be released at a later date, according to the Tokyo Metropolitan government.

After the opening ceremonies, temporary overlay work is scheduled by the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee to prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Games, during which time the facility will not be open to use by Tokyo residents, stated the government.
