In recent years, the popularity of cosmetic surgery has continued to evolve, particularly in East Asian countries such as Japan, where the demand for aesthetic procedures has grown to include adolescents under the age of 18.

One of the most common and cheapest of such procedures involves eyelids. While Westerners tend to have a crease in their eyelids, the Japanese do not, and over the past several decades, many Japanese people, most of which are women, have added that crease through the “double eyelid” operation, or surgical creation of a crease.

A survey conducted by Tokyo Isea Clinic found that the number of people undergoing eyelid surgery increased by 2.12 times from 2019 to 2020. Additionally, it found that the number of teenagers increased by around 2.3 times compared to the previous year, showcasing that the tendancy for cosmetic surgery in young people has increased. This can be attributed to a multitude of factors, one of the most obvious of which is the growth in the promotion of cosmetic surgery and the pursuit of perfection spread across social social media platforms.

A video of a mother named Rucchi from Japan encouraging her nine-year old daughter Micchi to undergo the “double eyelid” in a series of conversations posted on her YouTube account, as well as a video of the daughter’s surgery, has gained attention on the Chinese-owned short video-sharing app TikTok, with users criticizing the mother as well as the inexistence of  specific laws that prevent teenagers from getting cosmetic surgery.

There are no specific laws in Japan that prevent teenagers from getting cosmetic surgery; however, parental consent is required for patients under the age of 18.

In retrospect, while it has been reported that people that have undergone cosmetic surgery proclaimed increase in their confidence levels and although similar scenarios occur elsewhere in the world, people should ensure that the patients are fully informed of the consequences of their respective procedures, while taking into consideration that the adolescent is still developing psychologically and their perspective regarding their own physical appearance may change at a later stage, causing them to regret the surgery.
