TOKYO:  The two projectiles North Korea fired on Monday are believed to have been low-altitude short-range ballistic missiles that were hard to detect by radar, Japanese Defense Minister Taro Kono said Tuesday.

“North Korea may have tested a multiple rocket launcher along with the firing,” Kono added.

"North Korea is aiming to acquire various technologies. We need to enhance our comprehensive air defense capabilities," he said.

On Tuesday, Japan's Foreign Ministry lodged a protest against North Korea through embassy channels in Beijing.

According to Kono, North Korea's latest launches used the same system as employed in the firings of solid fuel low-altitude missiles between August and November last year.

Monday's projectiles "flew about 240 kilometers on a lower trajectory than those of Scud (missiles) owned by North Korea," he said.

Kono also said his ministry will upgrade the status of an Air Self-Defense Force surveillance squad as early as March 26 to bolster the management of the airborne warning and control system.
