TOKYO: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Chinese President Xi Jinping will have a telephone conversation in the near future, Chinese Ambassador to Japan Kong Xuanyou said Friday.

The phone talk is being arranged, Kong told a press conference in Tokyo.

Xi was due to visit Japan this spring as a state guest, but the trip was put off as the major Asian countries needed to cope with the coronavirus outbreak.

Current difficulties facing Japan and China are temporary and relations between them remain on an upward trajectory, Kong said.

He expressed gratitude for support the public and private sectors in Japan offered to help China contain the virus.

The ambassador said the Chinese government is now considering support for Japan.

With Japan experiencing a shortage of face masks, he said work is being done to enable Chinese makers to restore production capacity quickly and export their products to Japan.

On China's decision to ban entry to the country by foreign nationals holding visas and residency permits starting on Saturday, Kong said Beijing is aware that Japanese company officials need to visit China for business.

He said Japan and China are discussing how they can limit the impact on bilateral economic cooperation while ensuring the safety of their people, he said.
