TOKYO:  Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Saturday requested people to refrain from non-essential meetings and said coronavirus infections could escalate if people let down their guard and don't take proper containment measures.

Abe said the fight against the virus will be prolonged and Japan will create extra budget for its stimulus package.

Japan is eyeing a bigger economic stimulus than the one needed during the Lehman crisis, he added. The stimulus will include cash handouts to households.

Abe made the comments at a news conference in Tokyo.
