TOKYO: Japan expressed regret over the reinstatement of sanctions against Iran on September 28, which had been lifted under UN Security Council Resolution 2231 in 2015. The Japanese government emphasized the importance of resolving the situation through dialogue and close cooperation with relevant countries, based on the stance that Iran’s development of nuclear weapons must never be permitted.

In a statement issued on Sunday night, Foreign Minister Iwaya Takeshi highlighted the significance of diplomacy, including the early resumption of talks between the United States and Iran. “Japan calls on Iran to fully implement the Security Council resolutions that have been re-imposed and urges Iran to immediately resume full cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in accordance with its obligations under the relevant safeguards agreements,” he stated.

Minister Iwaya reiterated Japan’s unwavering commitment to resolving the issue through peaceful means. He expressed disappointment that despite Japan’s extensive and ongoing diplomatic efforts, including high-level discussions with Iran such as the Japan-Iran Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held on September 23, the involved parties could not reach an agreement.

Iwaya remarked that Iran’s nuclear issue currently stands at a critical juncture and reaffirmed Japan’s consistent position regarding the importance of resolving this matter through dialogue. He emphasized that the momentum for such dialogue must not be lost.

Japan recognizes the utmost importance of peace and stability in the Middle East, as well as the international non-proliferation regime. The country reiterated its commitment to undertaking all necessary diplomatic efforts in collaboration with the international community to ensure peace and stability in the region.
