TOKYO: The award ceremony for the “Japan Eyewear Best Dresser Award 2025” was held in Tokyo on Wednesday and the winner in the political category was Prime Minister ISHIBA Shigeru, local media reported.

The Prime Minister joked: “People say I have a scary face. I wear [glasses] to make myself look less scary on TV and in photographs.”

The last serving Prime Minister to win the award was the late HASHIMOTO Ryutaro 29 years ago.

The report says the prime minister has received many comments praising his impressive appearance with glasses while carrying out his official duties.

“My eyesight is not that bad,” Ishiba said. “It’s around 1.2 or 1.0. When I got my driver’s license, they told me I could drive without glasses, and I was like, ‘Yay!’ I have never been told I couldn’t drive without glasses.”

He said he was advised to wear glasses when he was running to become president of the ruling Liberal-Democratic Party. It was suggested glasses made him look “less scary.”

At the award ceremony, the Prime Minister tried on a pair of sunglasses he received as a bonus prize, and said, “Sometimes good things happen in life.”
