TOKYO: Foreign Minister MOTEGI Toshimitsu on November 6 appointed OKUBO Takeshi, former Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Lebanon, as Special Assistant to the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador in charge of Gaza Rebuilding Assistance.
“Ambassador Okubo has extensive experience in the Middle East, including Israel and Palestine, and has a broad network,” Foreign Minister Motegi said in a statement.
“Japan supports the two-state solution and will promote the ‘Comprehensive Plan to end the Gaza Conflict’ initiated by President Trump. Our efforts will focus on enhancing the humanitarian situation in Gaza and aiding recovery and reconstruction,” Motegi said.
According to the statement, Japan intends to support state-building efforts for Palestine, including Gaza reconstruction, and to dispatch personnel to a temporary governance mechanism for Gaza. The decision to appoint Ambassador Okubo came as part of these efforts.
Ambassador Okubo’s mission includes active participation in relevant meetings and close engagement with concerned countries and organizations, coordinating with the international community for Gaza’s reconstruction and establishing governance mechanisms.
