TOKYO: Thirty-five trainees from the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) training program “Emergency Assistance for Women and Youth in Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon: Promoting Peace, Food and Economic Security through Entrepreneurship” met with OBA Yuichi, Japan’s Deputy Assistant Minister of the International Cooperation Bureau and Ambassador for Global Health Diplomacy on Tuesday.

Japan’s Foreign Ministry reported that Deputy Assistant Minister OBA said Japan decided to support this training program to address the challenge of food security, one of the critical issues impacted by multiple international crises. The training program is implemented by UNITAR with support from the Japanese Government.

After an explanation of the training program and an expression of gratitude to Japan by MIKAMI Chisa, the head of UNITAR’s Hiroshima Office, three trainees explained the outcome of the training to date, their respective activities, and their expectations for the training program in Japan.

Oba expressed his hope that the participants would take the knowledge and skills gained from the training program back to their respective countries and utilize them for the future benefit of their countries.

UNITAR was established in 1963, and provides training for government officials from developing countries, as well as conducting research related to the functions and objectives of the United Nations.

The training program “Emergency Assistance for Women and Youth in Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon: Promoting Peace, Food and Economic Security through Entrepreneurship” aims to support capacity-building for youth and others in Egypt, Iraq and Lebanon to equip them with the knowledge and skills to improve food security and build sustainable food systems.
