Japan and India confirm cooperation over Covid-19 and security issues

TOKYO: Japan's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Toshimitsu Motegi, held Thursday a telephone talk with his Indian counterpart Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and expressed his gratitude for the support of the Indian government in the repatriation of Japanese nationals residing in India and requested continued cooperation for ensuring their safety, amid the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Motegi also requested cooperation for the resumption of activities by Japanese companies in India. The two ministers shared their views to further cooperate in the repatriation of their nationals staying in each other’s country.

The Japanese minister explained Japan’s cooperation towards India relating to the COVID-19, and the Indian minister Jaishankar expressed his appreciation for this assistance.

The two ministers exchanged views on their respective countries’ international cooperation in relation to COVID-19 prevention measures and confirmed that Japan and India will continue to work together closely, a statement by the foreign ministry in Tokyo said.

Motegi also expressed his intention to strongly resume advancing bilateral relations, particularly in terms of security and defense including the follow-up on the Japan-India 2+2 Foreign and Defense Ministerial Meeting, as well as the economy and economic cooperation, once the situation calms down.

In response, Jaishankar stated his intention to continue to promote Japan-India cooperation in a wide range of fields.

Furthermore, the two ministers shared the view to further strengthen bilateral relations based on the Special Strategic and Global Partnership, according to the statement.

The ministry said the call lasted for approximately 30 minutes.
