TOKYO: Japanese Prime Minister TAKAICHI Sanae on Wednesday urged Iran to ensure the safety of navigation for all vessels in the Strait of Hormuz.

Japan’s Foreign Ministry reported that Takaichi made the request in a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

Takaichi emphasized that a de-escalation of the situation surrounding Iran and the region is of utmost importance.

She stated that Japan welcomes the two-week cessation of hostilities agreed by the United States and Iran, calling it a “positive development.” She said she hoped that a final agreement would be reached promptly through diplomatic means.

She pointed out that the Strait of Hormuz is a strategic chokepoint for global logistics and serves the international community.

She also requested an early resolution to the issue concerning a Japanese national who was released on bail on April 6.

President Pezeshkian responded by explaining Iran’s positions on the various matters and the two leaders agreed to continue close communication in efforts to achieve a lessening of tension in the region.
