TOKYO: An early morning earthquake struck the northern Tokachi region at 5:24 a.m. on Monday. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the earthquake reached a maximum seismic intensity of 5+ on Japan’s 7-point scale and had an estimated magnitude of 6.1. The epicenter was located approximately 80 kilometers below the surface.
At a seismic intensity of upper 5, maintaining balance becomes difficult and standing is challenging for most individuals.
Light shaking was reported in Tokyo and other major cities; however, by midday, no damage or injuries had been confirmed. The Japan Meteorological Agency stated that there was no tsunami threat, although some local train lines suspended service as a precaution.
Approximately 15.5 million people live in areas affected by the tremors, with nearly one-third, or about 5 million, aged 65 or older, placing them at increased risk. In response, the government established a task force and urged the public to remain vigilant.
