TOKYO: Japan has welcomed the agreement between the United States and Iran to cease hostilities, calling it “a big step towards the resolution of the situation.”

Foreign Minister MOTEGI Toshimitsu issued a statement appreciating the “tenacious negotiation by the parties to the conflict and the efforts of relevant countries who played a role in mediation.”

“Japan has been making proactive diplomatic efforts based on its consistent position that what matters most is that de-escalation of the situation is steadily achieved as soon as possible,” Motegi said.

He added that Japan has been “strongly requesting” Iran to ensure the free and safe navigation of vessels of all countries through the Strait of Hormuz and hopes the agreement will realize this on a long-term basis and that a final agreement on Iran’s nuclear issue and other matters will be achieved as soon as possible.

“Japan, in close coordination with the international community, will continue to make every diplomatic effort toward the realization of peace and stability throughout the Middle East region,” he concluded.
