TOKYO: The Government of Japan on Friday announced an emergency grant of USD 15 million to address the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Iran, Lebanon, and Palestine. This funding, according to the Foreign Ministry, aims to provide essential support in health, medical care, and food security through international organizations, including the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) and Red Crescent Societies.
The allocation for Iran totals USD 10 million. This includes USD 4 million to the UNHCR for non-food items, water, sanitation, and hygiene, and health services. The IFRC will receive USD 2.5 million for health and medical care, while the World Food Programme will receive USD 2 million for food assistance. Additionally, the ICRC is allocated USD 1.5 million for health and medical care.
For Lebanon, the grant totals USD 4 million. The ICRC will receive USD 1.5 million for health and medical care, the World Food Programme will receive USD 1 million for food, the International Organization for Migration will receive USD 1 million for site management, shelter, and non-food items, and UNICEF will receive USD 0.5 million for water, sanitation, and hygiene.
Palestine, specifically the West Bank, will receive USD 1 million, which is allocated to UNICEF for water, sanitation, and hygiene projects.
Beyond the primary grant, the Japan Platform, a collaborative mechanism involving NGOs, the business community, and the government, has provided approximately USD 640,000 in humanitarian assistance to Lebanon. This funding, provided by the Japanese government, has supported three member NGOs, namely the Association for Aid and Relief, Japan, PARCIC, and the Campaign for Palestinian Children. Since March, these organizations have been distributing food and daily necessities to internally displaced persons affected by the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, the Ministry said.
The Government of Japan stated that it will continue to coordinate closely with relevant countries and organizations to improve the humanitarian situation and promote peace and stability in the Middle East.
