TOKYO: An online survey has found 36.5 percent of its respondents gained weight during the COVID-19 epidemic, as many stay home and work remotely to avoid infections.

According to the survey by Tokyo-based online fitness training service provider 30.f, 42.7 percent of female respondents and 30.4 percent of male respondents said they gained weight as a result of spending more time at home.

Most of them said they gained 1 to 3 kilograms, with the average weight gain at 2.6 kilograms for female respondents and 3.3 kilograms for male respondents.

Meanwhile, 51.7 percent of all female respondents and 63.3 percent of all male respondents said their weight has not changed.

"Many people are becoming fatter due to the coronavirus crisis," a company official said.

The survey also found that 55.7 percent of all female respondents feel stress in staying in their homes for a long time.

"Causes of weight gain can include lack of exercise and overeating from stress," the official said.
