TOKYO: Saitama prefectural police arrested a 67-year-old man on the wanted list after he registered his address at the municipal office to obtain the 100,000 yen in aid that the government provides to every citizen in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the police report, the man broke into a restaurant from an unlocked window last December and stole 20,000 yen (about $180) in cash in addition to items worth 7,000 yen (about $60) from the same store.

The suspect has denied the charges, local media reported.

He was reportedly spotted by the shop's camera and put on the wanted list by the police last March, but then disappeared.

Saitama police department said they are investigating possible involvement of the arrested man in about 40 to 50 cases of robbery from restaurants in the prefecture since last year.
