TOKYO: The daily number of new cases of the novel coronavirus came to a record 1,260 in Japan on Wednesday, the first-ever figure above 1,000 in the Asian country, surpassing the previous record of 981, set on Tuesday.

The nationwide tally includes 221 new cases in Osaka Prefecture, 167 in Aichi Prefecture, 101 in Fukuoka Prefecture, 44 in Okinawa Prefecture, 30 in Gifu Prefecture and 10 in Mie Prefecture. All the prefectural figures renewed their respective record highs.

In Osaka, nearly 70 pct of the 221 newly infected people are in their 30s or younger. “We seek cooperation from young people,” Osaka Governor Hirofumi Yoshimura said.

In the northeastern prefecture of Iwate on the day, two men in their 30s and 40s, respectively, were confirmed positive for the virus. Iwate had been the last remaining Japan prefecture with no coronavirus case.

In Tokyo, 250 new coronavirus cases were reported, bringing the cumulative number of confirmed cases in the Japanese capital to 11,861. The daily count of new infections there exceeded 100 for the 21st consecutive day.

Of the 250 newly infected people, 160, or about 60 pct, are in their 20s or 30s, according to the metropolitan government.

Meanwhile, the total number of fatalities linked to the coronavirus in Japan rose to 1,018, with one death reported each in Tokyo and the neighboring prefectures of Saitama and Kanagawa.

A health ministry official pointed out that the rate of infections among people aged 60 or older, who have higher risks of developing severe symptoms if infected, is relatively low now, unlike the situation when a state of emergency over the epidemic was in place in the country earlier this year.
