NAGASAKI: Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe August 9 pledged to make additional efforts to combat the coronavirus outbreak in Japan in order to ensure that another state of emergency declaration will not be necessary.

“We must make efforts further so that we will not need to declare a state of emergency again,” Abe told a news conference in Nagasaki, which he was visiting to attend a ceremony marking the seventy-fifth anniversary of its destruction by a US atomic bomb.

Abe sounded cautious about a proposed additional revision to a special measures law in order for the country to step up its fight against the coronavirus.

The government will consider how to make a better system after the COVID-19 pandemic ends, Abe added.
