TOKYO: Japanese Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi said Tuesday that he will visit Okinawa Prefecture for two days from Wednesday.

This will be Kishi’s first trip to the southernmost Japan prefecture since he took office last month.

Kishi will hold meetings with Okinawa Governor Denny Tamaki and the leaders of municipalities that host US military bases.

He will also visit a Japanese Self-Defense Forces unit in the prefecture and the US Marine Corps’ Camp Schwab in the Okinawa city of Nago, where a facility to take over the functions of the corps’ Futenma air station, currently in a congested area in the city of Ginowan, also Okinawa, is planned to be constructed.

“I’ll do my best to gain local understanding and cooperation for the Japanese government’s efforts to reduce Okinawa’s burden of hosting US military bases,” Kishi said.

Okinawa is home to the bulk of US bases in Japan.
