TOKYO: A 93-year-old woman, Michiko Saito, has been protesting in front of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry for nearly 10 years, calling for safer energy for future generations.

“I have been protesting against nuclear power plants for 60 years,” Saito said at her post near the METI building in Tokyo. METI is responsible for Japan’s energy and nuclear policy. She insists that nuclear power comes from “unreliable technology.”

“There are many things in the universe that us humans cannot even comprehend,” she said. “Humans created nuclear power plants thinking they know what they are doing and then horrible accidents happen and there are no protocols to undo the damage.”

In the past, Saito made protests in front of the embassies of countries that performed nuclear tests and continues her daily sit-in despite her advanced age.

She was joint by another demonstrator, Reiji Yamamoto, who said, “Nuclear power plants truly go against the global energy trend.”
