TOKYO: It is difficult for the Japanese government to present at the moment a specific schedule for providing COVID-19 vaccines to citizens, Chief Cabinet Secretary Katsunobu Kato said Monday.

This is because there is currently no vaccine that has obtained pharmaceutical approval in Japan, Kato told a news conference.

He also said that the government will procure COVID-19 vaccines in line with its basic policy of aiming to secure enough vaccines for all citizens by the end of June.

A discrepancy of views had been shown between administrative reform minister Taro Kono, who also oversees coronavirus vaccinations, and Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Manabu Sakai about when the government will secure vaccines for all citizens. While Kono said the schedule for supplying vaccines to citizens has not been decided yet, Sakai said the government expects to secure the necessary quantity of vaccines for all citizens by June this year.

On the British government’s recent announcement suggesting the coronavirus variant spreading in the European country may be more deadly, Kato said, “We need to deal with the mutated strain with a strong sense of crisis.” He said Japan will work with other countries to take thorough border control measures.
