Strong earthquake shakes Northern Japan

TOKYO: A strong earthquake, which originated in Fukushima prefecture, shook high-rise buildings in Tokyo on Saturday night, Metrological agency said.

The magnitude of this trembler was at 7.1 shindo of the Japanese scale of 7, and its epicenter was at the depth of 60 kilometers deep in the waters of the Pacific Ocean off Fukushima prefecture, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Seismic intensity of Shindo 6 upper magnitude was registered in southern Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.

The 23 wards of Tokyo prefectures felt the seismic intensity at 4 Shindo. Tokyo residents felt the strong sway that lasted for about 20 seconds.

The agency defines level 4 as being felt by most people even if they are walking, and likely to awake people who are sleeping. It causes hanging objects to swing significantly.

The earthquake shook also the neighboring prefectures of Fukushima at the scale of from 6 to 4 Shindo.

A resident in Fukushima prefectures’ Iwaki city told Arab News Japan by phone, “I felt it was the first big earthquake that made me afraid as I remembered the Tohoko 2011 earthquake.”

The agency said there may be some sea level fluctuations along the coast of Japan due to this earthquake, but there is no concern about Tsunami.

Meanwhile, at 11:09 pm, the Japanese government set up an official residence countermeasures office at the crisis management center of the Prime Minister’s official residence.

Officials said the center is collecting information on the possible damage situation by contacting relevant ministries and local governments.

Electric power outage registered in Iwate left 8500 houses without electricity in Miagi prefecture according to Tohoko Power company .That caused the fast trains networks to stop in the area.

Nuclear power companies stopped operations in the area to check possible abnormalities.

TV networks showed some small damage on old buildings, and some offices had the furniture scrambled.
