TOKYO: A moderate earthquake with an intensity of 4 on the Japanese scale hit Miyagi Prefecture in northern Japan on Tuesday morning. The quake had a magnitude of 4.8.

The Japan Metrological Agency said there was no danger of a tsunami.

The epicenter of the quake was just off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture at a depth of around 80 km.

In the neighboring prefectures of Iwate and Fukushima, the intensity registered 3 on Japan’s 10-point scale.

The earthquake struck just two days before Japan commemorates the 10th anniversary of the 9.0 quake that devastated northern Japan, generating a massive tsunami and leading to a meltdown at a nuclear power plant in Fukushima.

Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima were the worst-hit areas at that time. Fukushima Prefecture was also hit by a strong 7.1 earthquake last month. Japan defines level 4 Shindo as being felt by most people even if they are walking and likely to awake people who are sleeping. It causes hanging objects to swing significantly.
