Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga said Tuesday that he will skip the kick-off ceremony for the Tokyo Olympic torch relay in Fukushima Prefecture, northeastern Japan, on Thursday.

“I decided not to attend the ceremony due chiefly to parliamentary schedules,” Suga said in a written answer to a question from the press.

“I hope the torch, which will travel around the country, will provide a precious opportunity for everyone to feel that the Tokyo Games will start soon,” he said.

The ceremony will be held at the J-Village national soccer training center in Fukushima.

The Diet, the country’s parliament, is examining the government’s draft budget for fiscal 2021, which starts in April.
