TOKYO: US biotechnology startup Moderna Inc.’s coronavirus vaccine is slated to arrive in Japan next week, Jiji Press learned Tuesday.

The vaccine would be transported by Japan Airlines from Europe, where it is produced, to Kansai International Airport near the western city of Osaka, informed sources said.

The Moderna vaccine can be stored for up to six months in a freezer set at minus 20 degrees Celsius, and for a month in an ordinary refrigerator, making it easier to use than the vaccine by US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc.

Pfizer’s vaccine needs to kept at around minus 75 degrees Celsius for long-term storage.

Health minister Norihisa Tamura has already suggested the possibility of approving the Moderna vaccine in May.

Takeda Pharmaceutical Co., which applied for the approval under its partnership with Moderna, will distribute the vaccine in the country.
