TOKYO: Despite torrential rain, the National Olympic Stadium in Tokyo was illuminated in gold on Wednesday to mark 100 days before the start of the Olympic Games postponed from last year.

The Olympic rings near the Olympic Museum the NTT docomo Tower were lit up in the shadow of the new Olympic Stadium but due to the rain and the ongoing pandemic, there were few people around to see everything.

A sign near Tokyo’s Metropolitan Gymnasium, which will host the Olympic table tennis events, shone brightly with the message: “Empowering women to make a difference.”

According to a recent poll, 70 percent of Japanese are against hosting the Games and there is opposition from medical professionals and some lawmakers.

Currently, a fourth wave of Covid-19 is hitting Japan, especially the Osaka region. Infections are also rising in Tokyo, including new variants that make it harder to control the virus.

IOC President Tomas Bach’s goal of hosting the Games to symbolize victory against the pandemic is likely to prove a difficult challenge.
