TOKYO: In response to Iran’s decision to produce enriched uranium up to 60%, Japan has urged the country to “refrain from provocative measures.”

On Tuesday, Iran informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that it would start producing enriched uranium up to 60%.

In a statement issued by Foreign Ministry Press Secretary Tomoyuki Yoshida, Japan expressed a strong desire for Iran to comply with the the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, “to refrain from provocative measures that undermine the agreement and to act in a constructive manner aiming to resolve the issue through the dialogue.”

The statement added: “Japan supports the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which contributes to the international non-proliferation regime and thereby to the stability of the Middle East. Japan is strongly concerned that Iran will start producing enriched uranium up to 60%, which is close to weapons-grade highly enriched uranium, while the positive dialogue on Iran’s nuclear issue is ongoing among relevant countries.”

Yoshida said Japan will “continue its diplomatic efforts toward easing tensions and stabilizing the situation in the Middle East in coordination with relevant countries and international organizations,” including the International Atomic Energy Agency.
