NEW DELHI: A 48-year-old Japanese woman died in the Indian capital of New Delhi after novel coronavirus infection, Jiji Press learned Monday.

It is believed to be the first death of a Japanese person in India related to COVID-19, according to the Japanese embassy in New Delhi.

The woman was diagnosed as coronavirus-positive, but she had to stay home because she was not admitted into hospital for lack of a vacant bed, a bereaved family member said.

About one hour after her oxygen level dropped suddenly around 3 pm on Sunday (9:30 am GMT), she was sent from home to hospital, but it was too late.

The woman, a native of Osaka Prefecture, moved to New Delhi about 10 years ago. She lived with her first son.

On Monday, India reported more than 368,000 new infection cases and 3,400 fatalities over the past 24 hours. In New Delhi, the medical system is being overwhelmed as daily infection cases exceed 20,000.
