TOKYO: Japan condemned in the strongest possible terms a series of recent terrorist attacks in Afghanistan, including the attack near a school in Kabul which caused civilian casualties including many schoolgirls.

“We express our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families for the loss of their loved ones, and pray for the swift recovery of those who were injured,” the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The ministry said that Japan notes Taliban’s announcement on May 10 of a ceasefire during Eid al Fitr as a positive step. “Japan hopes that such moves will lead to progress in peace negotiations, and at the same time, we call on all the parties for a permanent and comprehensive ceasefire,” it added.

“Japan, in close collaboration with the international community, will continue to contribute to peace and stability in Afghanistan.”
