TOKYO: The number of Arab residents in Japan has reached 6,356 as of the end of December 2020, according to data obtained by Arab News Japan from the Ministry of Justice’s Immigration Agency. 

Egyptians made up the largest number with 2027 people, followed by Syrians, Tunisians and Moroccans.

There are 457 people from Saudi Arabia. Sudan was next with 273 residents, followed by Algeria (214), Jordan (211), Iraq (161), Lebanon (160), Yemen (118), the United Arab Emirates (85), Palestine (67), Libya (50), Qatar (39), Bahrain (28), Kuwait (28), Somalia (28), Oman (24), Mauritania (22), Djibouti (13) and the Comoros (3). 

The data showed that the number of Pakistani residents was 19,103, followed by Turks (6212), Iranians (4121), Afghans (3509), and Israelis (600). 

These numbers do not include diplomats, according to the agency. 

The ministry divided the categories of residency into work, study, university education, art, religion, media, and highly skilled professionals in administration, law, accounting, medicine, research, education and others. Refugees, Japanese university graduates, entertainment performers and trainees are also included. Their families were also part of the total number of residents.

On a wider scale, the total number of registered foreign residents in Japan amounted to 2,887,116 as of December 2020 out of a total population of 125.71 million. 

Among all nationalities, Chinese residents made up the largest number with 778,112 or 27 percent, followed by Vietnamese at 448,055 (15.5 percent). South Koreans came in third with 426,908 residents (14.8 percent), Filipinos 279,660 (9.7 percent), Brazilians 208,538 (7.2 percent), Nepalese 95,982 (3.3 percent), Indonesians 66,832 (2.3 percent), Taiwanese 55,872 (1.9 percent), and from the United States 55,761 residents (1.9 percent), excluding members of the military forces stationed in Japan. The number of Thai residents reached 53,379 (1.8 percent).

In terms of continents, Asia ranked first, with the number of non-Japanese Asians residing in Japan (2,435,281). South America had 272,279, Europe 75,010, North America 71,564, Africa 18,595, and Oceania 13,760.
