TOKYO: Former Japanese Prime Minister ABE Shinzo called for maintaining the tradition of patrilineal succession for the Chrysanthemum Throne in a magazine interview published on Saturday.

“Patrilineal succession has continued for 126 generations,” Abe said in the latest issue of the monthly Bungei Shunju magazine. “We must consider the weight of history and protect tradition.”

Currently, only male descendants in the Imperial Family’s paternal line can ascend the throne.

On Sanae Takaichi, policy chief of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, whom Abe supported in last year’s party leadership election, the former prime minister said, “The fact that she tries to do everything on her own is her Achilles’ heel.”

“She will rise to greater heights when she is able to entrust others with work,” he said.
