TOKYO: Several dozen students and activists on Tuesday denounced in Tokyo what they branded as the rhetorical escalation of nuclear confrontation by Russia and NATO over the Ukrainian war and called on responsible countries to resort to peace and negotiations to solve conflicts.

A few Ukrainians in traditional costumes joined the gathering held in front of Tokyo’s Shinjuku station, that sees millions of passengers pass by every day.

Both Russia and the NATO were denounced by the protesters for their possession of nuclear arsenals that pose a “threat to peace.”

On the current war in Ukraine, that has so far claimed hundreds of lives, protestors expressed concern over the risk that this conflict might become a world war and that the Chernobyl nuclear site could become a battlefield.

Protesters held anti-war signs in Arabic, French, Spanish and Japanese.

The demonstrators also spoke on the risk of the conflict ignited in Asia with plans to modify the pacifist constitution of Japan, and by American medium-range nuclear missiles installed in a show of military muscle in connection with the conflict between China and Taiwan.
