TOKYO: People in Tokyo gathered to mourn the demolition of the iconic  Nakagin capsule building, designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa and built in just 30 days in 1972.

A demolition notice and three padlocked mailboxes hang on the barriers. Bystanders stopped to read and take photographs.

After the demolition, Just twelve capsules will remain in museums.

Enveloped by night and illuminated by the city lights of the overhead highway, the building of 140 removable capsules embody Metabolism, an architectural movement that became popular in the 60s but gradually declined.
