TOKYO: Japan’s minister of justice, FURUKAWA Yoshihisa, has declined to comment on French authorities’ decision to extradite former head of Renault and Nissan Motor Co., Carlos Ghosn from Lebanon through the Interpol.

“As the Minister of Justice, I am not in a position to respond to the activities of foreign authorities,” FURUKAWA said at a press conference on April 28 in reply to a question from Arab News Japan.

“Generally speaking, if we comment on the activities of foreign authorities, we are concerned that the relationship of trust with the countries concerned will have various effects,” the minister said.

“Therefore, I would like to refrain from commenting on the activities of the authorities of each country.”

Ministry officials have indicated that there is no change regarding Japan’s position but the case has reached a dead end as there is no extradition treaty between Japan and Lebanon.

French prosecutors have reportedly issued an international arrest warrant for Carlos Ghosn for allegedly funneling millions of dollars from Renault SA through Omani dealer for his own use.
