TOKYO: Japanese Defense Minister Taro Kono said Monday that he has instructed his ministry and Self-Defense Forces to increase the use of renewable energy sources at their facilities across the country, starting in fiscal 2020, on a trial basis.

"If we stop relying on imported energy, we'll become more resilient," Kono said at a press conference.

He issued the instruction on Dec. 13, calling for increasing the proportion of renewable sources such as hydroelectric, wind and solar power close to 100 pct of all energy sources used by the ministry and the SDF.

Kono also sought to secure stable energy supply and reduce costs. These are key challenges that need to be addressed to achieve his goals.

The minister also said that the ministry and the SDF will buy such renewable energy mainly from local suppliers to support regional economies.
