If national flags were characters, there would be no better occasion than the Olympics to showcase them, and The World Flags project has done just that.

Reimagining the participating countries as anime characters, the project presents the flag as unique anime figures with elements of the flags incorporated in the costume and design.

In conjunction with Tokyo Olympics 2020, a group of artists have put together artworks and information about the flags of different countries, using traditional clothes in a very anime-like fashion.

What started as an education and entertainment concept, the artwork is now beginning to catch people’s imagination.

The World Flags website says the characters aim to generate excitement for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics by promoting “gijinka” or creating human traits based on inanimate objects.

Each listed country has its kanji, famous quotes, or idioms from the country. Japan, the Olympic host, has the character Kamamoto sporting a Hinomaru Costume while France’s Alain is seen in Tricolore Armor.

Similarly, Norway’s Munch is seen in the IndigoBlue Scandinavian Cross, while Belgium’s Dardenne is dressed in the Musha costume.

The UAE’s Nassar, or Nassaru, represents the seven emirates that make up the country, transforming into a design that contains all the colors of the original flag.

Even though this is not an official Olympics project, it brings to the fore the popular symbols associated with Japan – samurai, manga, and anime characters.

Besides being the personification, the “World Flags project” also delves deep into the origin and characteristics of the national flags by giving an in-depth description of the flag.
